Storm Of War
The Rise and Fall of Doctor Victor Von Vandervaughn
Victor Von Vandervaughn was born of wealth and high social standing. His father was a well respected member of the Mages Guild and his mother was a distant member of the royal family of Eligiber. He was known as a highly intelligent and mischeivous youth, frequently getting in trouble due to excessive exuberance in practicing his burgeoning skills with wizardary. He had inherited his father’s gift and maybe more. He was accepted in to the Mage Guild’s Academy at the youngest age ever. With the early tutelage of his father, he was advanced past the basic classes quickly and developing new magics.
He was always a confident and proud youth and the deference and adulation he was now subject to increased his sense of “self-worth”. He adopted the flamboyant clothing style of his mother’s people, which made him standout among the muted robes of his mageling peers. He was reprimanded when he got caught experimenting on dead creatures and using necromancy. With his fathers influence and a donation for the building of a new gym at the academy, these youthful indiscretions were swept under the rug.
Rumors of more experimentation with necromancy and even demonology continued to follow the young student, but were not pursued due to the relative youth and the great promise of the student. After all, don’t all mages have to resolve their own issues with the dark side?
Even with these shadows hanging over his name, Victor was beyond being at the top of his class. He was just having to go through the motions of being a student until the powers that be elevated him to full mage status. He was already doing the work of an experienced mage, but with the unprejudiced eye of youth.
All this would change in an instant. His father and mother were killed in a bizarre accident at a mage guild party. Shortly after, Victor raised his father from death as a lich. His father was always an opponent of Necromancy and his anger at being raised was great. He denounced his son to the mage guild and submitted to destruction.
The Mage Guild convened a tribunal and started prosecution of Victor for necromancy. Even with his spirited defense of extreme grief over the death of his parents, he was found guilty. He swore that he would be proved right in the end and they could not silence the truth. He was stripped of his robes and ordered never to practice magic again. His fortune was seized by the government. He was exiled from the Mage Guild for life.
Victor found himself on the street, pennyless and without a friend in sight. With no access to his previous social and potential business contacts, he quickly turned to a life of crime. He engaged in complicated plots that resulted in very visible results. Great explosions and destruction always ensued after each robbery. Most of these crimes were committed with the help of groups of undead and human minons. And always an overly complex plan that showcased his brilliance. He quickly became The most wanted man in Punjar. He started back wearing the Eligiber fashions and sporting a bright scarlet cape everywhere he went.
Finally, the recently arrived Dread Guard was able to catch him in the act. A huge battle began between the Guard and Vandervaughn’s force of minions. Vandervaughn was killed in the battle by a falling building. No remains were found.
